What Causes a Herniated Disc?

If you’ve ever suffered the pain of a herniated disc, you know how it can impact your life. The back and leg pain can be excruciating and can keep you from enjoying your life. Every little movement is agonizing, so staying active is next to impossible. Fortunately, your chiropractor knows just what to do to help you get relief from a herniated disc.

Discs keep your vertebrae cushioned and supported. When a disc is herniated, it means the disc is pushed out of proper alignment. It also means the disc could be putting pressure on nerves, which can cause tremendous pain.

You Can Develop a Herniated Disc Due To:

  • An accident or injury
  • Degenerative joint problems
  • Lifting or carrying heavy objects
  • Using poor body mechanics when moving
  • Sitting or staying in one position for a long period of time

You May Be Suffering From a Herniated Disc if You Experience:

  • Pain that radiates down your leg
  • Numbness or weakness in your leg
  • Pain that radiates down your arm
  • Pain in your shoulder
  • Numbness or weakness in your arm
  • Slowed reflexes

Your chiropractor may begin treatment with imaging studies, including an MRI, to determine the location and degree of the herniated disc.

A physical examination combined with imaging studies and other tests can help your chiropractor develop a treatment plan, which may include:

  • Spinal decompression, which works to gradually realign herniated discs
  • Manual adjustment and manipulation, which works to help relieve joint and nerve pressure
  • Electrical stimulation, which works to help reduce muscle spasms, pain, and swelling
  • Physiotherapy, which will help you learn proper body mechanics and movements to protect your spine
  • Thermal therapies, which will reduce swelling, boost circulation, and promote healing
  • Massage therapy, which will relax muscles, tendons, and ligaments and help reduce pain

If you think you might be suffering from a herniated disc, your chiropractor is the right person to see. To find out more about the causes and treatment of a herniated disc, call your chiropractor today.
